MA Jewellery  (University for the Creative Arts)

Year 2: working with found objects.

The original project was going to be working with the camera aperture principle, but a crisis of confidence  took me back to looking at something that would restore it a little. I looked at the work undertaken through the exploratory practice in the first part of the degree and reconsidered the experiences with thimbles.

Originally, they held memories as they belonged to my grandmother.  There were not many, so I had to resource others.  These came without any memories, but some had hallmarks spanning many decades and a couple with over a century.  A variety of different ideas were considered and I  have looked at many options in the last six months.

I settled on two directions.  Resourcing artists and creating caricatures of their art work, focussing on the most well known or those with a personal link.  The others related to some degree to things that make up who I am as a person.  Some are spiky, unique, playful, have a bit of science fiction, relate to my love of my garden, and even have an element of connecting with others.

Here, though,  I am showing the ones going to my final show.  These are the ones based on Artists past and present.  Creating them made me laugh, and so often spend hours looking at how they would then be shown.  The boxes came later, but make the ideas I had come full circle.
I was awarded my MA, with a Merit.     Never achieved anything beyond a B grade at O level before this.  So, very pleased with my dyspraxic brain!  Missed out on the Distinction by 2 points, but still happy with the result.  Yay!
Once upon a Thimble...  A Tale of found objects.  The pieces below were created for my final project and ended  up as part of the final show.

Inspired by one of my favourite paintings by Grant Wood:  American Gothic (or should I say American Gothimble)  I loved making these little caricatures,  the jacket can be removed... still thinking of adding a pair of dungarees
Picture
Inspired by a visit to the Frida Kahlo exhibition.  This is based on her 'Self Portrait - Thorn Necklace with black humming bird'.
SOLD to a private collector

I saw the thimbles and knew they had to become part of a layered design and turn into a Starry Night.  Inspired by another favourite artist, Van Gogh. SOLD to a private collector
Picture
Magritte's 'Son of Man' inspired this thimble - caricaturing the hat , apple and tie in a playful homage to this amazing abstract artist
Picture
Homage to Klimt - The Kiss.  I loved making this pair.  It is functional on so many levels and has so many narrative options.  To wear it as a couple, or as a single and share it with a friend.  To walk hand in hand and have a secret kiss... it is so rich in ideas.

A beautiful take on Klimt by Zylberman, inspired me to make these Golden Thimble Tears.  - SOLD to a private collector

Last minute addition to the flock.  Sadly, due to a conflict of interest, one of my inspired by thimbles cannot be seen in public.  Here then is the Great Thimble Wave instead...including my artwork!  SOLD to a private collector.

Dali inspired thimble.  An ode to my grandmother and so subtitled 'Persistence of Grandma'  When I was young I would sit with her while she would sew her  nurses belt, nurses dress, her favourite ballroom gowns, or repair a handbag, or add a few sequins to an outfit. - Sold to a private collector

Living near Bristol,  it seemed only just that I include Banksy in my caricature thimbles.  The wings, move randomly when the halo is wiggled. A play on the 'Drunken Angel' it represents.  SOLD to a private collector

Thimble with a Pearl Earring, of course.  Vermeer inspired this playful creation.  SOLD to a private collector
